"Moonrise Kingdom" is about a pair of young lovers who flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out to find them. It was directed by Wes Anderson and was released in 2012.
Although I absolutely love this movie, recommending "Moonrise Kingdom" is a little bit more difficult for me. It has a very obscure sense of comedy that many are not completely fond of. It also boasts a sometimes awkward plot, telling the love story of two children. Due to these factors, "Moonrise Kingdom" is considered an amazing movie by some of my family and friends, while disliked by others.
Regardless of a person's particular like or dislike of the film's humor, there is no denying the visual beauty of it. Wes Anderson is often recognized by his symmetrical shots and his usage of color. "Moonrise Kingdom" features camera work and color that is undoubtedly amazing. All of Anderson's signature quirks, whether it be his close up shots or his zoom shots, are nearly perfected in this film. In addition to the camera work, "Moonrise Kingdom" has a score that perfectly matches the tone of the film. These skills work together to build a world that is extremely encompassing.

In addition to how well-crafted it is, "Moonrise Kingdom" is also masterfully written. The dynamic between Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman) and Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward) is hilariously awkward and pure. They both deliver charismatic performances and fully capture the awkwardness Anderson was aiming for. Every scene involving the Khaki Scouts and Scout Master Ward (Edward Norton) prove to be extremely comical. And of course, the Wes Anderson regulars deliver as always. Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman, and Tilda Swinton show once again why they work perfectly under the direction of Anderson. Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand also give great performances and share another amusing relationship.
When examining Wes Anderson's work, it can be seen that he focuses on familial relationships in his films. This remains true for "Moonrise Kingdom." Both main characters struggle to overcome family problems which leads to the central premise of the story. Whether it is Suzy's unsound relationship with her parents or Sam's life as an orphan, Anderson provides the viewer with relationships that are very interesting and thought-provoking.
"Moonrise Kingdom" is a film that sounds as if it should not work. However, the encompassing world and well developed-characters prove otherwise. "Moonrise Kingdom" provides the viewer with a very enjoyable and hilarious coming of age story.
